The Blue Aeroplanes had been going an awfully long time even when they got the R.E.M. support slot that catapulted them to medium-ranking success in the late 1980s. Listen to R.E.M’s subsequent work though and Stipe’s vocal has more than a hint of Gerard Langley speak/sing delivery. Today everyone is speak/singing so now is a good time as any for an Aeroplanes return. For the uninitiated, it is mountains of jangling guitars underneath Langley’s genius/irritant delivery and an onstage dancer who at 63 apparently still performs with the band.
